Fiat money

What is 'Fiat money'?

Fiat money issued by a central government. It has no intrinsic value but was invented to ease trade barriers. The opposite of fiat money is commodity money as e.g. silver, gold, or tabacco. Commodity money got an intrinsic value because it is not only used as a medium of exchange but also for other purposes and demands.
