Myetherwallet
What is 'Myetherwallet'?
My Ether Wallet (MEW) is an open source, client side interface that allows you to directly interact with the Blockchain to access your stored Ether or ERC-20 tokens. It is important to understand that MEW does not store or protect any of your data nor your private keys. You remain in full control of your data but also in full responsibility to keep your private keys safe. We recommend you to access MEW with a hardware device (wallet) like the Ledger Nano S or a Trezor. This is the only way to make sure that your private keys are kept safely and are not getting exposed to anyone else. In the following subcategories we will explain how to safely create a MyEtherWallet without and with a hardware device. We also give you further information and advice to properly use the interface and its tools.
How to create your 'myetherwallet'
In order to set up your MEW correctly you should complete the set up in the following order:
- Visit: https://www.myetherwallet.com(double-check the domain)
- Save https://www.myetherwallet.comas a favorite website in your browser to minimize the risk of phishing attacks in the future.
- Read through the MEW introduction. It gives you further information and understanding about MEW and safety precautions.
- Type in a «strong» password including digits, capital letters and at least nine characters.
- Click on the button «Create a new wallet» to start the procedure.
- Plug-in a Memory Stick with a capacity of at least 1 GB.
- Now you are able to download your «Keystore-File». The Keystore File is one of many ways to later access your wallet. Due to its importance it is absolutely essential to keep your Keystore File as safe as possible and hidden for everyone. We recommend you to download the file directly onto your Memory Stick.
- After the download click on the button «I understand. Continue.»
- Now you can see a new site popping up showing your private key. The private key is the most convenient way to access your wallet. You could compare it to the code required to access the funds of your bank account. To keep your electronical key as safe as possible without a hardware wallet, we recommend to copy & paste the key phrase into an empty Word/Pages document and save it directly on the Memory Stick.
- Underneath the private key you can also see a button «Print Paper Wallet». If you click on this button, a printable submission with a QR Codes and the written out phrases of your Private key and Public Address will show up. The safest way to access your wallet (without a hardware wallet) would actually be to manually type in the private key every time you are accessing the wallet. Obviously this method is inconvenient for many users and they use the less safe but more convenient method which is explained in the previous paragraph.
- Click on the button «Save Your Address.» in order to continue.
- Now your wallet is set up. MEW offers you a wide range of possibilities to access your wallet. You can choose between a Ledger Nano S, a Trezor, your Keystore File (see number 7) or a Private Key (see number 9). Due to the fact that you set up your wallet without any hardware device, the only way to access it is either with your saved Keystore File or your private key.
